Most basketball shoe brands make dubious promises that you’ll jump higher and run faster when you wear their shoes, but research supports one performance tool that will deliver desired on-court outcomes...

Adequate sleep.

According to research by Cheri Mah, MD, MS from The Stanford Center for Sleep Sciences and Medicine Disorders Clinic and Research Laboratory, elite college level basketball players saw measurable on-court performance improvements by increasing their amount of total sleep time.

Researchers asked players to maintain their normal nightly schedule (sleeping six to nine hours per night) for two to four weeks, then aim to sleep ten hours each night for the next five to seven weeks. They abstained from caffeine and alcohol, and incorporated naps when travel prohibited them from 10 hours of nightly sleep.

🏀 The results were significant 👇

👟 Players ran faster in 282-foot sprints (16.2 seconds vs. 15.5 seconds)

🎯 Shooting accuracy improved (Free throw % increased 9% and 3-point field goal percentage increased 9.2%)

😴 Fatigue levels decreased following sleep extension
